The Web Committee is establishing Sober Events & Sobriety News posting procedures for the HAI Bylaws.
If we strictly follow the AA Traditions (5 and 6 specifically) we would NOT be able to post events put on by Al-anon or any other external entity. However, GSO states that AA groups can develop their own posting procedures.
Judy, Web Committee Chair, started the meeting by acknowledging that issues have arisen recently regarding event eligibility and posting standards on the HAI website. She presented research findings that while AA intergroups cannot directly post events from external entities, they can include links with appropriate disclaimers. She further explained that AA.org uses disclaimers when linking to external entities, and a disclaimer might allow flexibility to post Al-Anon and other non-AA events. However, she emphasized the importance of maintaining the group’s singleness of purpose to avoid internal conflicts.
Derenda expressed support for the disclaimer but raised concerns about which groups would be excluded, particularly Al-Anon. Amy, Al-Anon’s HAI Liaison, also discussed concerns about restricting Al-Anon events. They considered the possibility of handing out hardcopy flyers to promote these events at intergroup meetings.
Karen agreed with the disclaimer concept, but noted that strict exclusions could lead to confrontations, and supported allowing Al-Anon to post events. Karen also suggested that we include language that refers specifically to Traditions 5 & 6.
Misty expressed confusion about which hosts would be allowed to post, questioning whether we would prevent posting Recovery Float and Women’s Serenity Retreat information. Chrystal emphasized that we would not be flexible on posting events for recovery houses and treatment centers. Crystal and Judy agreed that while strict parameters are needed, some flexibility might be appropriate.
The committee agreed to develop a disclaimer to add before linking to or posting non-AA events. The group agreed that Judy will present this proposal at the next HAI meeting for further consideration with language as follows.
The Website committee will propose adding language to the HAI Bylaws that will outline the events posting process for aaharrisburg.org. See details here.
