Sobriety News
MAY 2003

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

The Sobriety News is a publication of the Harrisburg Area Intergroup of Alcoholics Anonymous. It is written, edited, and read by AA members, and those interested in the AA program of recovery from the disease of alcoholism, linking one alcoholic to another.
Our desperation to find relief from the bondage of alcoholism has led us to this program as a new "design for living". Many members utilize meetings, sponsorship, self examination, amends, prayer, meditation, AA literature, service to fellow alcoholics, and many other tools to maintain their recovery. This publication is intended as one more tool to live a life of recovery. Because each AA member has an individual way of working this program, divergent views to recovery, within the concept of the Program of Alcoholics Anonymous, are welcome. An effort is made to print all viewpoints in this forum. Articles are not intended to be statements of AA policy, nor does publication of any article imply endorsement by AA or the Harrisburg Area Intergroup.

Your Help for the Calendar of Events

A complete Calendar of Events depends on our active members contributing information about their coming events, participation of Intergroups in surrounding Districts, and our ability to gather information. We feel it is worth trying. Let us know what you think. Often, we miss opportunities within the fellowship because the message didn't get out. We all want to carry the message to other alcoholics. This will be one more way we can accomplish that.

OUR FACE IS CHANGING

Sobriety News is updated during the course of the month, so events can be added to the Calendar. You may, therefore, find it helpful or informative to check back to the website periodically to see what has been added.
The HAI index page has links to flyers of coming events, or you can click on the AA blue button above. Did you know that the links page also has links to other AA websites and to back issues of Sobriety News? Also there is a link to the Meeting Schedule (or click the coin at right) so you can print out the schedule (if you can access Microsoft Word) on a single sheet of 8 1/2X11 paper. This schedule is current with the latest information available. If you see an error, or information for your meeting has been changed, the schedule will be updated if you notify Sobriety News at
info@aaharrisburg.org or if you notify an Intergroup Officer or mail the info to HAI, Fellowship House, 1251 S. 19th Street, Harrisburg, PA 17105. This current schedule can be duplicated for group purposes from this link or by clicking on the chip at the right.
Flyers will be added as they become available and removed when an event passes. If you are looking at this on the Internet, you will see that many of the insert pictures are links you can click on to get added information or flyers. Keep checking.
The above suggested service opportunity to bring internet information back to the group could also be broadened to include flyers, and current meeting schedules. The printed schedules and flyers will still be available but may continue to have their current disadvantages too.

NO SMOKING AT MAY INTERGROUP

Cathy S, Chair of the Unity Committee, reported that many groups are not represented at Harrisburg Intergroup Meetings on the first Thursday of the month at 6:45PM, because people can't stand the smoking. A vote was taken, and a resolution was passed, that there would be NO SMOKING at the APRIL Intergroup Meeting. The validity of the effect of non-smoking was not clear and it was decided to try it again in MAY. Persons entering the front door can pass straight into the meeting room, without going through the half measures room.

Multi-District History and Archives Gathering

Saturday, April 5, 2003, marked the District 36 hosted Multi-District History and Archives Gathering at Central Penn College, Valley Road, Summerdale PA. Although attendance was less than hoped, the few dozen attendees were treated to a very informative and entertaining program. The morning program was an interviews/discussion with two Eastern PA old-timers (54, and 56 years) moderated by our DCM Jared L. Chet H and Traynor H recollected the early days of AA in Harrisburg in the 1940s and the large distances they thought nothing of traveling. After lunch there was an Historians' Panel with Mel B. (Toledo OH, 53 years), Nancy O. (Wilkes-Barre, PA) and Mitch K. (Washingtonville, NY). this was followed by past General Service Trustee Tom J. of NY who spoke on the History and Purpose of the GSO Archives. He was followed by the Archives and History Panel with B J F (our Area 59 Archivist), Bill H. of the Maryland Archives Committee, and Mike G. of Philadelphia Intergroup (SEPIA) Archives. on how History and Archives connect with each other. There was an Archives exhibition from PA Districts and Intergroups, Maryland, and the Clarence S. ("Home Brewmeister") Archive now at Brown University. There were enough doughnuts for an army, and a satisfying lunch of cold cuts and potato salad.

There's More To Life Group's 14th Anniversary

The TMTL Group's anniversary meeting Friday April 25th saw a packed fellowship room of the Community United Methodist Church at 16th and Bridge Street, New Cumberland. Fellowship and plentiful cold cuts and other munchables were available from 5:30 till 6:30PM. The speaker Mike C (Irish Mike) from 40th Street via Limerick, Ireland, told a story of his early drinking in Ireland, and getting drunk in 57 different countries. He told of family, friends, and his 21 year career in international sales. He told of losing them one by one until that job that always allowed his excessive drinking finally was gone. He eventually went to an interview to go to treatment. He was scared that he wouldn't qualify. No need to worry. He thinks the only thing he learned was, if you want to stay sober, you have to go to AA. He didn't think the Steps were for him, but he did go to three meetings a week for the first two years. He saw that others were getting better, and he had a debating society loose in his head. He saw a lot of mention of God, which scared him. He talked to an old-timer who advised, 'Just believe in that power which has kept you sober for the past two years'. He had difficulties with God, with getting honest with himself, with dealing with resentments, and with making amends, but he did finally work the steps. He knows that even though the desire to drink has left, his disease is growing inside him, and he is grateful for a recognition of his disease and the gift of people in the rooms. He knows he can't survive without us. Tapes of Mike's talk were available afterwards. You may was to contact a TMTL member to get a tape of this or of the Bob O Walk though the Big Book Tapes. There may be some of these still available.

MORE  THAN AN HOUR OF JOY IN MT. JOY

The Mount Joy Chiques Church Group celebration of their 31st year played to a capacity crowd of recovering alcoholics in the fellowship hall. The speaker Ralph S, started off with a brief story of the progression of his disease. He said he'd recently heard a newcomer express that 'he'd spent a lifetime building a wall around himself' and Ralph thought that was the best description of his experience with alcoholism that he'd ever heard. He said he even had a ceiling on his wall. He said that he has maintained his sobriety one day at a time since 1974 with prayer. The prayers started with 'God help me', and gradually over the years, they are no longer about himself, but others on his prayer list. He said he has always been fascinated by drunks, likes to be around them, and going to a lot of AA meetings is a way of satisfying this want. After Ralph's hope giving talk there were a wide variety of dishes and desserts, and fellowship with friends accumulated over time in the rooms. Congratulations to Chiques Mt Joy Group on their anniversary.

The HAI Easter Egg Hunt

The Easter Egg hunt at Fort Hunter Park on April 19 was a hit again this year with a smaller than usual group of kids. The children who attended had a wonderful adventure at the Fort Hunter Park, searching out treasure! Oh to be young again, now I can never find the eggs even when I hide them. Events like this pay off now as well as in tomorrow's memories of yesteryear. Thanks to the committee for making it possible for some to mend some of the past damage of our own doing. Thanks to the 40th Street, Monday Nite Men's, and the Bridge Street Groups for donations.

SHOT OF ENTHUSIASM

The Harrisburg Area Intergroup is sponsoring another speaker event this time, hosted by the Middletown Groups. The event will be held in the Middletown Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall on June 7, 2003. The first speaker will be Stephanie O from Williamsport, PA at 6:00PM. There will be a brief break for those delectable Middletown desserts; make up a batch of your favorite, and bring it along to share. At about 7:30PM, the second speaker will be Tom F from Glen Burnie, MD. This promises to be a fun and informative recovery evening. Grab a newcomer and treat him to one of AAs enthusiasm builders.

Elizabethtown AA Groups 28th Anniversary

The Elizabethtown AA Group will be celebrating its 28th year of carrying the message on June 12, 2003. The food and fellowship begins at 7:00PM; Bring your favorite dish along to share. At 8:00PM we will be treated to the experience, strength and hope of Mike S. The entrance to the fellowship room is in the rear of the Christ Lutheran Church, 75 High Street (a half block north of the E-town Square), Elizabethtown. There is plenty of parking available in the lots at the rear of the church.

New Meetings and CHANGES

A new speaker meeting will be starting Sunday April 27 at Fellowship House at 2:00PM. On the last Sunday of each month the 2:00PM meeting will be a regular speaker meeting.

PLEASE ANNOUNCE AT EACH MEETING: THE BUILDING WHERE THE PINE STREET NOON MEETING IS HELD WILL BE UNDER RENOVATION FROM JUNE 2, 2003. UNTIL AROUND SEPTEMBER 15, 2003 THERE WILL BE NO MEETING HELD THERE BY THE PINE STREET GROUP UNTIL AFTER THE RENOVATIONS

There is a new open discussion meeting of The Way Out Group at the Epworth United Methodist Church at 21st and Derry Sts. The first meeting was April 27 and the good attendance showing promises good things for this new group. See the flyer on the links page; take a copy to your group. Come see what's happening - be a part of, not apart from.

There has been yet another change to the meeting schedule at the Colonial Park Any Lengths Group. The Wednesday night 7:00 p.m. open men's meeting is changing. Starting on Wednesday, May 7th the meeting will become a closed step and traditions meeting. Both men and women are welcome and as is their policy, smoking is permitted.

The New Day Dawning Group at Sixth St and Linglestown Road, which meets at 7:00AM on Wednesdays needs support. This is a handy spot for people coming down the river to get some morning inspiration before tackling the realities of a workday.

The Joy of Living Group restarted April 23rd and they need support. The meeting is held at Fellowship House at 6:00PM on Wednesdays.

Note that the contact telephone number for Al-anon has been changed to (877) 501-1205, and that the Alateen Wednesday evening meeting has been discontinued.

The Progress Group's Wednesday 8:30PM Mystery Topic Meeting at the Ridgeway Community Church at Elmerton and Progress Avenue is in dire need of support. Several of the regular members are unable to attend currently for various reasons. Also the 7:15PM Step & Tradition Meeting could use your support. Why not join in practicing the First Tradition by helping them weather this storm.

Pearl of the Month contributed by Jim M, c. Alcoholics Anonymous (Fourth Edition)..........Pages 72 &73

Time after time new-comers have tried to keep to themselves certain facts about their lives. Trying to avoid this humbling experience, they have turned to easier methods. Almost invariably they got drunk. Having persevered with the rest of the program, they wondered why they fell. We think the reason is they never completed their housecleaning. They took inventory all right, but hung onto some of the worst items in stock. They only thought they had lost their egotism and fear; they only thought they had humbled themselves. But they had not learned enough of humility, fearlessness and honesty, in the sense we find it necessary, until they had told someone else all their life story.

The Hershey speaker for Saturday May 3, 2003 is Bill C from Winding It Up at 8:00PM, and June 7 will be Kris K from 19th Street. FOOD FOR THOUGHT

12 Step Gem
contributed by Botswana Jim MacD

I took Step One, began to moan
I can't do this one on my own.

I took Step Two, began to pray
Restore me God, please now, today.

I took Step Three, gave up my will
Maybe God could love me still.

 I took a Fourth, I looked inside
 Nothing more would I hide.

And on the Fifth, I said aloud
I've done some wrong, and I'm not proud.

I took Step Six, and got prepared
To lose the defects, I was scared.

Now I'm at Seven, take them away
My God, for this I do pray.

And on Eight, the list was long
Amends to make for all the wrongs.

I took Step Nine, put down my pride
Amends made, I will not hide.

Step Ten I take, each day I pray
I make amends along the way.

And on Eleven I pray to know
Each day His Will, which way to go.

I take Step Twelve, I'm like a bird
To others now, I spread the word....

Service to another Alcoholic

We are fortunate to have Bob B volunteer to take over the responsibilities of Central Office Chair, and wish him every success in this difficult endeavor. Bob has already assumed the duties of managing the office and getting our answering service running smoothly, by appointing a committee to study the phone volunteer system to identify changes that could benefit users at both ends of the line. He will certainly appreciate your help in assuring that the hand of AA is there for the struggling alcoholic, or the traveler who needs meeting information. Why not give Bob a call at 838-9117 to offer a helping hand or
volunteer through your Intergroup Rep. Central Office needs phone volunteers to handle the phone during the day to help reduce the burden on the cell phone volunteer. This is rewarding service work, and Central Office hours are pretty flexible. Are you looking for service work for sponsees, with a year or more of sobriety , to assure them being part of  instead of apart from recovery? Maybe this would be the perfect match.

Traditions Checklist*

TRADITION FIVE: Each group has but one primary purpose -- to carry its message to the alcoholic who still suffers.

  1. Do I ever cop out by saying, "I'm not a group, so this or that Tradition doesn't apply to me"?
  2. Am I willing to explain firmly to a newcomer the limitations of AA help, even if he gets mad at me for not giving him a loan?
  3. Have I today imposed on any AA member for a special favor or consideration simply because I am a fellow alcoholic?
  4. Am I willing to twelfth-step the next newcomer without regard to who or what is in it for me?
  5. Do I help my group in every way I can to fulfill our primary purpose?
  6. Do I remember that AA old-timers, too, can be alcoholics who still suffer? Do I try both to help them and to learn from them?

*The Traditions Checklist Questions were originally published in the AA Grapevine in conjunction with a series on the Twelve Traditions that began in November 1969, and ran through September 1971. Sobriety News prints the Checklist for the number of the month that corresponds to the number of the Tradition that it deals with, because of the prohibitive length of all twelve. It is important that we be aware of the Twelve Traditions in our lives of recovery, because they help assure that AA will continue to be here for us, and for others who want it.

This-n-That

Don't forget the Harrisburg Area Intergroup meeting Thursday the 5th of June at 6:45pm, and the District 36 General Service Rep meeting on Monday June 9th at 6:30; both meetings need your support. The Intergroup Bookstore is still open for business following the HAI meeting and on Saturday mornings from 10:00 till 11:15 for Groups to restock their literature cabinets with books and pamphlets.

April Intergroup Meeting

At the April meeting Bill C expressed optimism at renewed participation by the AA community in Intergroup activities. He led a discussion on the interest in sending more literature to Botswana and a vote was made to send $56 worth of pamphlets plus the cost of postage. Bob B announced that he has eight new volunteers for the hotline, and is very encouraged that there is a renewed interest in service work. As a result of ensuing discussion it was voted to re-survey groups for volunteers every six months and make it a responsibility of Reps to notify Bob of volunteers who no longer wish to serve in a capacity they had previously signed up for.

The Winding It Up Group brought the meetings to the Harrisburg State Hospital in April, the Middletown Groups have volunteered for May, and TMTL offered for June. The There's More To Life Group took the cell phone for April, and 19th Street volunteered for May. The Middletown Groups will continue bringing a meeting to the Gaudenzia Boys facility through June 4, which will complete their thirteen week commitment.

The April meeting was attended by Reps from 19th Street, 40th Street, Ain't You Had Enough, Al-anon, Bridge Street, Chapter 9, Dillsburg, Harrisburg Area Men's, Hershey, Millersburg Unity, Rule 62, There's More to Life, Trudgers, West Shore Area, West Shore Women, and Winding It Up. Did you and your group have a voice?

Groups Continue Supporting Intergroup
Group contributions during the month of April to the Intergroup Fund were $395.00. We thank the following 5 groups for their contribution: Concordia Group, How It Works Group, West Shore Area Women, Harrisburg Area West Shore Group, and the 19th Street Group. Of course, we also would like to thank all the groups and members who continue to donate time toward Intergroup's activities. These activities include speaker meetings, picnics, men and women's prison meetings, State Hospital visits, Internet Website, meeting schedules, literature, the AA Hotline, and the many other vital AA functions that help alcoholics recover in our community. Intergroup performs those services for our community which no single group is prepared to handle, and it coordinates activities between the 56 groups it serves. Remember that we can do together what none of us could do alone.

SOBRIETY NEWS is published monthly, and is usually available on the website the Tuesday night before the first Thursday of each month, so paper copies can be distributed to Reps at the Intergroup meeting. You can locate this newsletter, as well as lots of other stuff that would interest members of groups belonging to the Harrisburg Area Intergroup, at http://www.aaharrisburg.org
